Temp & Perm Office Recruitment – Market Commentary October 2016

Overall, in the past three months the demand for office staff has maintained the status quo. However, in September we experienced a spike in urgent short term temporary customer service / accounts roles. Clients were prepared to pay our temps top $ in order to fill the immediate need. Interestingly since early October, the demand has returned to the level we had been experiencing throughout the rest of 2016.

Quality candidates are still difficult to find as it appears they are not prepared to move organisations in the current environment unless there is a long term secure position on offer.

Whilst there hasn’t been a lot of change over the past 3 months we do find client requirements to be very last minute and with more urgency .

Again, customer service and accounts payable / receivable are the major requirements within the “temporary with a view to possible permanency” space .

As the year draws quickly to an end, we anticipate a peak in demand for temporary assistance prior to the Christmas break. As many companies will shut down for two to three weeks, we do not envisage many permanent roles will be on offer before February 2017.

Temp & Perm Office Recruitment – Market Commentary July 2016

Melbourne

The overall market trend within office support is predominantly short term ‘urgency’ with relief reception, customer service, help desk and bookkeeping requirements. These short term assignments often stretch to longer term and sometimes even convert to permanency. The ‘try before you buy’ approach regularly works well for both the employer and the employee. By providing a high quality temporary staff member a commitment to a permanent role is often forthcoming.

Hence, the requirements for permanent staff members appear to have been replaced with the tentativeness of seeking a temporary requirement with a view to converting to permanency.

Sydney

We are currently experiencing high demand for short term temporary relief, predominantly reception/office administration. Permanent requests, as with Melbourne, are ‘try before you buy’, requesting temporary staff with the possible conversion to permanency. Candidates in Sydney appear to want easy access to public transport as they are not enthusiastic about having to drive to any location.

Both Melbourne and Sydney appear to be retaining similar salaries/hourly rates – anywhere between $27 and $32 per hour.

Author Richard Moy on Mashable

I used to fall into the trap of thinking that the longer an interview went, the better my chances of getting the job became.

This wasn’t something that hindered me exclusively in the early stages of my career, either. I had a bad habit of talking hiring managers’ ears off for as long as they could tolerate me. Continue reading →

4 interview questions that are actually OK to ask (because the answers matter)

Author Richard Moy for The Muse

If you prepare for interviews as thoroughly as I think you do, you’ve probably got a (long) list of questions to ask. But you probably also worry about which ones are actually OK to bring up — and which could cost you the job.

Yes, when I was a recruiter, people would most definitely address off-putting topics, but I also found that some people avoided perfectly normally inquiries out of fear of seeming rude. Continue reading →

Temp & Perm Office Recruitment – Market Commentary April 2016

Moving into the second quarter of 2016 has brought with it an escalation in temporary staffing requirements in both Melbourne and Sydney. Clients appear to be more tentative in offering a permanent role initially, taking a cautious approach to recruitment, although conversion from temp to perm is happening regularly. Clients appear to be less sure of their long term requirements and hence the predominance of temporary assignments across the office staffing sector. Continue reading →
